LAMDA HELLIX’S HERAKLION-1 TO TURN CRETE

INTO AN INTERNATIONAL DATA HUB

CRETE, Greece, November 21st, 2022 – Lamda Hellix: A Digital Realty Company, a leading provider of carrier-neutral data center services in Southern Europe, today hosted an event unveiling plans for its new data center located in the city of Heraklion, set to become the first carrier-neutral facility in Crete.

During the presentation, it was revealed that Lamda Hellix’s investment is expected to be the largest technological investment the island of Crete has ever received. The event itself was attended by several senior government stakeholders including Adonis Georgiadis, the Minister of Development and Investments, Zacharias Doxastakis the Vice Regional Governor of Crete, and Vassilis Lambrinos, the Mayor of Heraklion, in addition to several other Lamda Hellix executives and partners.

Lamda Hellix’s new investment in Heraklion, Crete, is the latest in a series of strategic business moves the company is making as it continues in its goal to create a new era of secure, highly interconnected data communities around the world. This new facility is expected to serve as an interconnection hub for intercontinental and regional subsea cables and complement its growing presence in Athens, which has two operational data centers and two under development. As a hub for global data traffic, these investments are expected to have a multiplier effect on the Greek economy.  According to the international consulting company IDG, for every 1 euro of initial investment by Lamda Hellix in Greece, the total added value exceeds 8.23 euros.

Situated in Heraklion, the new data center will be the island’s first carrier-neutral facility, and it is expected to support the development of up to 6.5 megawatts (MW) of installed IT load, with the first phase scheduled for completion in 2025. Lamda Hellix expects the facility to serve as an interconnection hub for intercontinental and regional subsea cables landing on the entire island, including at Heraklion, Chania, Tympaki and Sitia. Heraklion-1 also is also expected to enable the significant expansion of PlatformDIGITAL®, Digital Realty’s global data center platform, and contribute to the local economy through the expected creation of several hundred local jobs.

Apostolos Kakkos, President and CEO of Lamda Hellix: A Digital Realty Company, during the opening event, noted: "Heraklion-1 is a high point in our journey, as with the realization of this emblematic investment – a landmark for Crete, a game-changing vision of years is realized. It is the vision to place Crete Island and Greece on the international data transfer map.”

Kakkos continues: “Announcing today the creation of the largest investment in the technology sector in Crete, fills with pride and satisfaction the executives of the company who have worked with passion and dedication to make it a reality. This is the culmination of our high specialization and know-how, but also of the accumulated experience of many years in the field of data centers, which, combined with the unparalleled support of Digital Realty, becomes a reality, creating new development prospects for both Heraklion and Crete, as well as about the role of our country in the international data transfer market.”

In December, a file containing details about the investment is expected to be submitted for consideration to the Ministry of Development and Investments in Greece. If accepted, Lamda Hellix’s investment will be formally recognized as a Flagship Investment of Exceptional Importance, underlining its importance to the surrounding community, as well as Greece’s economy more broadly.
