LAMDA HELLIX STRENGTHENS PRESENCE IN GREECE WITH TWO NEW DATA CENTERS IN ATHENS
The expansion comes as the company also announces its rebrand to Digital Realty
ATHENS, Greece, December 8th 2022 – Lamda Hellix, a Digital Realty Company (NYSE: DLR), the largest global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data center, colocation, and interconnection solutions, announced today that it is expanding its presence in Athens, Greece, with the development of two new data centers.
The first facility, ATH3, is currently under construction and set to be operational by March 2023. When completed, it is expected to be the largest data center in the country, able to support up to 6.8 megawatts (MW) of capacity within its 8,600 sqm facility. The second facility, ATH4, is projected to deliver an additional 6.8 MW of capacity when operational, currently expected to be sometime in 2024.
Both ATH3 and ATH4 will be connected to Lamda Hellix’s existing ATH1 and ATH2 facilities, giving customers access to the densely populated, rapidly growing connected data communities that have been established at these sites. Through PlatformDIGITAL®, Digital Realty’s global data center platform, customers will be able to connect to the businesses that matter most across Digital Realty’s global footprint of more than 300 data centers in 50 metros across 27 countries on six continents.
In conjunction with Digital Realty’s expanded presence in Crete, where a new data center is being developed in Heraklion, ATH3 and ATH4 will form part of Digital Realty's broader vision to strengthen its Mediterranean presence, as well as Greece’s position as a key strategic gateway to Eastern Europe and North Africa.
To mark the announcement, a high-profile ceremony was held today at Digital Realty’s Athens Data Center Campus in the presence of the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis; the Minister of Development and Investments, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis; the Minister of Digital Governance, Mr. Kyriakos Pierrakakis; US Ambassador, Mr. George Tsunis, as well as Digital Realty’s CEO, Bill Stein; and Lamda Hellix’s Chairman and CEO, Apostolos Kakkos.
"These new facilities will add needed capacity and further strengthen the connected data communities that have developed in our data centers. Our continued investment in Greece will provide critical infrastructure for the country, which is necessary for the acceleration of cloud and content providers’ entrance into the market, and which further contributes to digital transformation and economic growth,” said Apostolos Kakkos, Chairman and CEO, Lamda Hellix.
“Digital Realty is pleased to be expanding its presence in Greece, with ATH3 and ATH4 playing an important role in meeting the increasing demand for carrier-neutral data center capacity in this market. It’s an important part of Digital Realty’s integrated Mediterranean strategy, which will enable customers to build new network routes with lower latencies to Eastern Europe and Northern Africa,” said Bill Stein, CEO, Digital Realty.
The event also coincides with Lamda Hellix’s rebrand to Digital Realty. With PlatformDIGITAL®, Digital Realty is providing its customers with a safe meeting place for their data, where data is exchanged, optimized, connected, and controlled on both a local and global level.
“Since the acquisition of Lamda Hellix by Digital Realty, we have committed significant resources towards integrating our systems, processes and procedures, and we are extremely happy to now be able to rebrand to Digital Realty and focus on the common purpose that has solidified Digital Realty's presence worldwide: to help foster a unified global company whose mission it is to bring companies and data together, in bold new ways, to power the innovation determining our future," added Kakkos.
