LAMDA Hellix, awarded as Best Regional Data Centre Operator 2009 in Europe, was appointed by a Public Tender to develop and operate for the next 7 years the new Green High-Density Data Center of the Greek Research and Education Network (GRNET).

During the implementation of the project, state of the art APC technologies were applied for the first time in Greece, while on the same time the infrastructure will accommodate the high-standard IT and telecommunications equipment of GRNET broadband connections. The new cloud computing technologies will be used to create a new central infrastructure that would be able to -reliably and effectively- provide cloud computing and storage services throughout the Research and Academic Community in Greece (e.g. virtual machines).

The new Data Center of GRNET is the newest most advanced Data Center in the Public Sector and at the same time the only Green High-Density Data Center (16 kW/rack), with a total installed power capacity of 1600 kVA for supporting critical infrastructure equipment and Power Usage Effectiveness <1.8.
The project was developed according to latest specifications as they are imposed by the European Union Code of Conduct for Green Data Centers, providing infrastructure energy efficiency, reduction of both power consumption and operating costs (free-cooling) and coincidently ensuring high availability.

Apostolos Kakkos, CEO of LAMDA Hellix pointed out: «I am excited that we developed and we operate for the Greek National Networking Research and Education -therefore for the Academic and Research Community in Greece- one of the most technologically advanced Green Data Centers in Europe within the record-time of only two months. This project endorses the advancedcapabilities, skills and know-how of LAMDA Hellix in cooperation with its strategic partners, APC and Panduit, while developing and operating World-Class Green High-Density Data Centers».
